A guide to Ceilidh and Barn Dance Bands
A ceilidh or barn dance is a fantastic way to entertain guests of a wide age range. It is great fun for
all age groups – from children to the more mature guest. With a skilled caller, he will ensure that guests mix together,
and that total strangers will soon become acquainted!
No experience is required!
A good caller will assess the ability of the guests and provide a variety of dances that will challenge
but not confuse! The caller will teach and guide guests through the dances. Any band booked through NSN Productions Limited
will contact you to discuss the venue and age range of the guests. They will also make suggestions to ensure your guests have
a fabulous time.
The music!
The instruments played by the bands range from reproduction medieval instruments to modern. The music
is from traditional sources – England, Ireland, America,
Scotland and some parts of Europe. Musicians
normally play without sound enhancement to create an authentic sound. The caller uses a microphone to make sure the guests
can hear the instructions! A typical instrumental combination for the band would be violin, keyboards, guitar and percussion.
What does ‘Ceilidh’ mean?
‘Ceilidh’ (pronounced kay-lee) is a Gaelic word for a gathering at which people sing, tell
stories play music and dance. My cousin had a ceilidh for her wedding: guests sang, played instruments, danced and read poetry.
It was the most fantastic experience – and we made many new friends! A highly recommended entertainment for all age
groups.
